Artistic contribution

to Culture and Development

John Simpson

„... european involvement“

The British Council is the UK's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations: it connects people worldwide. It currently operates in 109 countries, 19 of these in Sub-Saharan Africa. Recent reorganisation has seen the Council move away from relatively small scale, country based activity to focus on regional, multilateral projects such as Crossing Borders and Power In The Voice (links below).

Whilst not a donor organisation, the Council works in partnership with the creative/cultural sector in several broad ways: highlighting its value and contribution to national and international economies - including training in entrepreneurship and capacity building for economic sustainability; the interface between arts and development in a broad sense, i.e. encompassing social issues, democracy, freedom of expression etc; and the role it believes artists/creatives can play in helping open up difficult spaces and opportunities for understanding across cultures.
